Cultures from around the world shake their hips, to celebrate events such as birth, marriage and the seasons. Men, women and even kids undulate their torso and hips to release evil spirits, praise the gods and celebrate life. It's hard to imagine that when Elvis shook his pelvis in the 1950s, the NY Times criticized it as "Strip-tease behavior." And the NY Herald Tribune called it "short of obscenity." But decades later, while men and women are shaking their thing all over TV, we can still feel embarassed to let loose and dance, especially without a drink.
Yet hidden deep within, we each have strong and steady rhythm, the heart-beat. Musically and biologically, it is the "base" of our bodies. But to find our inner "soul" requires letting go: freeing our minds from over-thinking, freeing our bodies from slouching over the computer; and freeing our fragile egos from the fear of looking uncool.
Dancing ignites and unites our higher soul with the earthly fire of life. Don't let shyness or even two left feet rob you of this thrill. Check your inhibition with your coat, and just follow your heart, literally.
